Getting started with FlyInside should be quick and easy. You'll be flying in no time!
- 1 Running FlyInside
- 2 Getting Started
- 3 Basic Use
- 4 Next Steps
First, make sure that your virtual reality headset is connected to your computer and working. Be sure that your monitor and headset are connected to the same graphics card, that SLI is disabled, and that your computer is setup as described in Hardware Setup
To run FlyInside just start "FlyInside FSX" or "FlyInside P3D" from your Start Menu. FlyInside ?may ask you to pick some basic settings and make some changes. Just follow the instructions one by one. You may need to restart FlyInside after these changes are made.
Eventually your flight simulator should open your monitor, while FlyInside will appear inside your headset.
Recentering Head Position
The first thing you'll see when running FlyInside is a prompt to reset head position. Look straight ahead and press any button on your joystick to reset your view position.
Recentering Without a Joystick
If you do not own a joystick you can reset your head position using your keyboard.
To do so, take off your headset and make sure that your simulator is opened to an airplane cockpit. If your simulator is on the opening screen with flight selection options, then enter a flight. Next, click on your simulator window to make sure it is focused. Finally, put on your headset, look straight ahead, and press a key on your keyboard.
A joystick, HOTAS, or yoke is highly recommended for flight simulation. Having? one of these controllers increases immersion and makes flight control easier. If you are just getting started, the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick is a good entry-level joystick.
The Interaction Button
Once FlyInside is running you'll need to choose an interact button. The interact button allows you to navigate menus, ?move windows, and in future updates will allow you to manipulate aircraft systems.
You should see a dialog prompting you to choose an action button. Press a button on your joystick which is convenient and easy to reach. If the right button has been selected, look at "Use this Button" (a blue dot will appear over it) and press your interact button again to continue.
If you forget what your interaction button is you can clear it by running "Reset FlyInside FSX Settings" or "Reset FlyInside P3D Settings" from your Start Menu.
Interaction Without a Joystick
If you do not own a joystick you can choose an interaction button from your keyboard.
To do so, take off your headset and make sure that your simulator is opened to an airplane cockpit. If your simulator is on the opening screen with flight selection options then enter a flight. Next, click on your simulator window to make sure it is focused. Finally, put on your headset and choose an interaction button by pressing it on your keyboard.
Trial and Activation
By default, FlyInside runs in trial mode. In trial mode, flights are limited to 15 minutes of VR flight-time. After 15 minutes you may continue your flight on-monitor, or restart your simulator. There is no limit on the number of 15-minute flights you can take.
On the trial window you can choose "Try Now!" to continue in trial mode or "Activate" to enable your purchased version of FlyInside. Look at the button you would like to click so that the blue dot appears over it, and press your interaction button.
In the Cockpit
Once you've setup FlyInside, chosen an interaction button, and started your free trial (or activated FlyInside), FlyInside should take you into your aircraft's cockpit! The cockpit should have depth as if it were a real object around you, and you should be able to turn and move your head naturally.
If you are still on a FlyInside menu view, it is because your simulator has not loaded to a virtual cockpit. You can remove your HMD to see whether your simulator requires user interaction in-order to load.
Moving the Camera
You may find yourself a little too far back, a little low or a little too close to the cockpit panel. You can adjust your camera position using the following keyboard shortcuts:
It is also possible to edit the default position of your view for each aircraft. For more information, see Cockpit Camera Movement
The FlyInside Tag
The FlyInside Tag allows you to switch to the FlyInside Menu View. To make the Tag appear simply press your Interaction Button. If you don't press it again, the Tag will fade away after several seconds.
You can move the tag by looking at the movement controls on the left-hand side (with the blue dot), holding down your interaction button, and looking around.
You can adjust the volume by looking at the volume slider at the top of the tag and pressing interact.
Finally, you can enter FlyInside's Menu view by looking at the large square Menu button and pressing interact.
